Sándor Balatonfüredi, secretary general of the Hungarian Gambling Association said to Magyar Nemzet they would lodge a complaint with the President of the Republic and with the Constitutional Court because they found the amendment unacceptable as several points of it were disadvantageous to the companies.
The amendment has been made without any effect analysis, there has been no consultation with the association and only parts of the bill have been sent to them. Within one and a half year the taxes have been almost doubled: in 2003 HUF 55 000 was the tax paid after a gambling machine, from this autumn this will rise to HUF 100 000.
According to the secretary-general the state budget will not gain much by the rise because the restrictions will cause the bankruptcy of several companies while the law gives an unlimited access to the Hungarian market by multinational companies. It is also criticized that the law prohibits the use of the name ’casino’ for arcades with gambling machines.
