Next year the needy in Hungary will be deprived of a food relief worth more than HUF 2 billion from the European Union because there are no officials to organize the programme in the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development. In Poland even this year more than 50 000 tons of food can be distributed from this relief fund.
The intervention grain reserve in Hungary is four million tons – this is the quantity the Europen Union has bought from the farmers at a set price. This year a good crop is expected, too, but there is the last year’s crop in the stores as well. 95 000 tons of this could have been distributed for the poor but Hungary, though earlier it expressed a different view, said there was lacking the necessary administrative background for distribution. Hungarian humaniarian organizations deplore this move as more and more people require a food relief in Hungary, mainly families with three children or more – there are 155 000 such large families in the country.
