Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány in his address on the first day of the autumn session of the parliament announced that from early October petrol prices might be lower. In his speech he criticized populism, referring to Fidesz and its chairman, Viktor Orbán. The Premier claimed that ’the common enemy’ of the social democratic, liberal, and conservative parties was populism. He criticized the political elite which was in his opinion ’egoist and mediocre’ He repeated several times the necessity of a ’patriotic cooperation ’ and praised the state of Hungarian economy, calling on Viktor Orbán to face him ’as a man and as a democrat’ and repeat the accusations about the alleged crisis. He said his cabinet was ’courageous’ in tackling old problems and the new budget would help to create a ’just and safe’ country. He returned to the disputed issue of the sale of Budapest Airport Company and emphasized it was necessary to develop the airport to make Budapest the centre of the region. János Áder, faction leader of Fidesz called on the Prime Minister ’to govern instead of fighting’, reminding the Premier of the populist election promises back in 2002 while Ildikó Lendvai, faction leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party warned of the necessity to preserve the rule of law in the issues of reprivatization. Gábor Kuncze, faction leader of the Alliance of Free Democrats said he ’loved’ privatization and called it hypocritical that in the past fifteen years nothing happened in the field of health reforms. In his answer Premier Gyurcsány repeated his views about the dangers of populism while János Áder questioned the Premier’s capability of leading the country after so many scandals, and evidences of incompetence and confusion.
