This week, after the meeting of the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, it became clear to everyone that Peter Magyar is being given assistance to delay his immunity case for as long as possible and to avoid criminal accountability by hiding behind his immunity, MEP Tamas Deutsch wrote. He continued:
It is well known that Hungary’s Chief Prosecutor filed a motion in the fall of 2024 with the president of the European Parliament to lift the immunity of the president of the Tisza Party due to a criminal act of theft. According to the information uncovered during the ongoing investigation and the details that have come to light, on June 21, 2024, at dawn, while Peter Magyar was intoxicated and partying at a Budapest nightclub, he exhibited scandalous behavior, prompting the club’s security guards to remove him using a chokehold,
the politician stated in his post.
At the nightclub, among others, the victim of the criminal case filmed the politician with their mobile phone. When Peter Magyar and one of his companions noticed this, they got into an argument with the victim. During the dispute, Peter Magyar suddenly grabbed the phone from the victim’s hand and pocketed it. Despite repeated requests from the victim, he refused to return the phone and denied having it. After being removed from the nightclub, he headed towards the Danube, followed by several people, including the victim. Magyar walked directly to the riverbank and deliberately dropped the phone into the Danube. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, this conduct constitutes the offense of theft under the law,
Deutsch added.
Peter Magyar, who had previously campaigned for the abolition of parliamentary immunity, announced last fall in response to the prosecution’s motion that he would not give up his immunity, using it to avoid criminal accountability. The European People’s Party and the leftist-liberal majority in the European Parliament have actively assisted the Tisza Party president in his abusive use of immunity. What they are doing is pure political complicity. Parliamentary immunity is not intended to place MEPs above the law or to allow them to misuse their position to evade accountability for criminal offenses,
emphasized Tamas Deutsch.
In light of this, he reiterated:
“We once again, in the strongest terms, call on the European People’s Party to cease being a political enabler of Peter Magyar’s misuse of parliamentary immunity to evade accountability for his criminal acts.”
Hozzátette:
We firmly believe that, in accordance with the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, the plenary session must promptly decide on the suspension of Peter Magyar’s immunity in the usual procedure to remove the technical obstacle preventing him from being held accountable for his criminal actions. Otherwise, we will be forced to take all justified extraordinary parliamentary and legal steps. The law applies to everyone, including Peter Magyar.
