The level of a poisonous material called aflatoxin found in the products of companies in Kalocsa, Szeged, and Sükösd had exceeded the permitted one so the government prohibited the sale of all products using paprika. According to the Paprika Product Council probably imported materials caused the contamination.
It occurred first time last year that red peppers from Brazil were imported for the mixture of Hungarian red pepper. Experts say Hungary can lose 15 pc of its market in Europe because of this scandal. The police has started an investigation in the case, the producers will have to indemnify the consumers, too.
