Yesterday the Hungarian organizations beyond the borders gave out a common statement in the matter of dual citizenship. The document has become public by the Hungarian Coalition Party in Slovakia. The statement expresses the shock by which the Hungarians beyond the borders received the news about the result of the referendum on dual citizenship and they think the great proportion of people who were absent was partly due to the fact that the governing parties supported the ’no’ votes. The subscribers of the statement claim the so-called ’native country’ programme or other material supports cannot substitute either the moral principle behind dual citizenship or the unimpeded contacts of Hungarians. They have requested the Hungarian government and the parliamentary parties to amend the law and facilitate that Hungarians beyond the borders may receive dual citizenship without leaving their native country. They are ready also to take part in the preparation of the bill and expect the government will convene the Hungarian Permanent Conference to settle the issue.
