Last week Ferenc Herbert, Socialist representative of the municipal self-government in an open session criticized the fact that ’Brazilian production lines’ (in Hungarian slang groups of Romany unskilled workers) were employed by companies winning the public acquisition tenders. The politician who had been Socialist MP between 1994 and 1998 later apologized for his statement. László Tóth, local faction leader of Fidesz said this racist statement questioned the position of Ferenc Herbert, cíhairman of the EU integration committee. Aladár Horváth, adviser of the Gyurcsány government called the statement a sign of primitive racism. ’Who speaks like this sends himself back twenty years into Socialism’, he added. Flórián Farkas, Romany MP (Fidesz) condemned the statement though he found it typical because the Socialists, in spite of always declaring the importance of the development of the Gipsy community they were almost genetically prejudiced against the Romany population.
