The XXI.Century Institute has held a round- table conference about the three years of the Medgyessy-Gyurcsány government and most of the participants claimed the best expression was to say that it was a period of dynamic marking time. According to János Veres, Minister of Finance Hungary is still able to meet the conditions of joining the eurozone by 2008.
The majority of the experts agreed in the fact that the Gyurcsány government used its media background more profitably but this did not help it to go beyond words and to realize its programme. According to Tibor Gazsó politologist it seems that in this situation close to bankruptcy the government does not consider the consequences of its measures to meet social demands: the slogan ’let everything be okay!’ is not a programme. Zoltán Somogyi saw the development from a different angle stating that the Gyurcsány government managed to turn the trend and the coalition was able to catch up with Fidesz in the opinion polls.
There was a consensus in the view that there was an urgent need for a general reform of the paralysed public administration while economist László Csaba, Professor of CEU said Hungary could be capable of adopting the euro in 2010 but the economic policy of the country was not prepared for that. The economist said there was a possibility to consider the modification of the public budget because of the soaring twin deficit.
