Three local trade unions have announced a strike for December 19 from 4.30 AM to 18.00 PM in the name of the majority of workers in Ferihegy airport if the talks will not be successful with the employers. István Kovács, head of the strike committee emphasized yesterday the three trade unions had 1300 members and they are supported by most of the employees so the traffic of Ferihegy might be completely paralyzed. The trade unions protest against the planned massive dismissals and the offering of work for external services without informing the employees about the real causes of the dismissals.
In a letter to Premier Medgyessy the Railway Workers’ Trade Union demands the soonest possible starting of reconciliation talks about the dismissal of 11 000 railwaymen while the cabinet denies supporting the technological development of the national railway company (MÁV). ’This will result in the deterioration of the services but in the long run may lead to the liquidation of MÁV’, said Dezső Simon, chairman of the Railway Workers’ Trade Union. After the EU-accession MÁV will have to compete with other companies but István Csillag, Minister of Economy and Transport would not even answer the letter of the trade union that was why they turned to the Prime Minister.
