LESS AND LESS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

This year 10 pc less students have registered themselves for an academic entrance examination than last year, the National Entrance Examination Office reports.

The number of applicants for evening, correspondence, and distance learning courses has reduced significantly. The greatest decline can be measured in applications for courses specializing in languages where the higher level GCE is demanded. 150 000 applicants have submitted 380 000 applications to universities and colleges. The official explanation for the lower number of applicants is the fact that in recent years more students have been admitted than usual so fewer people try it again. The interest for arts and economic faculties has increased while less students are interested in faculties of agriculture, informatics, technology, and science. 23 000 applicants have chosen the economic field, 14 000 prefer arts and 8000 want to study technology.
