Neither the Hungarian proposal for a temporary EU budget nor the announced tax reform plan have impressed Brussels, both proposition made by Premier Gyurcsány have been accepted with a shock in Brussels. László Surján, MEP (People’s Party), member of the budget committee said the idea of a three-year temporary budget shocked the majority of MEPs. ’The proposal is basically wrong, it does not even mention the priorities of the European Union, including the remedial course programmes for the ailing economies of the recently acceded countries. The proposal does not refer to the fact that these countries are excluded from the common agricultural policy for ten years.’ Joaquin Almunia, economic and monetary commissioner of the European Committee said in a press briefing yesterday that he was surprised at the news of the Hungarian tax reform plan. Hungary has been given time with a deadline of July 8 to make the appropriate measures to reduce its state budget deficit.
