One of the Internet portals claims Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány has requested Cardinal Erdő, Primate of the Catholic Church of making the priests abstaining from political manifestations. The private meeting took place in the Premier’s study on Friday and lasted for half an hour and it has not been followed by a press briefing. Though the piece of news is not reliable it can remind one of the Premier’s visit to the Holy See last year in mid-December when the Prime Minister criticized the Hungarian Catholic Church for its participation in party politics, mentioning the referendum of dual citizenship and the demonstration of students of Christian schools. Cardinal Sodano said then 'it seems the Hungarian bishops faithfully represent the social teaching of the Church and they are not only good Catholics but good patriots, too’. Bishop András Veres, Secretary of the Conference of Hungarian Bishops said there was no change expected in the attitude of the clergy during the election campaign as Catholics priests and monks were not supposed to take any part in politics and the circulars of the bishops usually refer to the conscience of the faithful to take part in the election and follow Christian values by their votes.
