Peter Szijjarto believes that the UN General Assembly's high-level week should always be seized as an opportunity to discuss difficult issues. He always hopes that Hungary's European and transatlantic friends share a similar view, but this appears to be a mere illusion, Hungary's foreign affairs and trade minister told HirTV in an interview.
He pointed out that on Thursday, he met with Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik and will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday to discuss that Hungary wants peace and that they should do everything in their power to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The whole world is getting tired of the war, everyone is expecting peace to be finally achieved, (...) and countries outside Europe do not understand what they have to do with it, the minister said.
"When there is war outside Europe, European foreign ministers always appeal to the parties to end the war at the negotiating table, whereas now that there is war inside Europe, Europeans somehow fail to say this. Non- Europeans have said that Europeans appear to be fueling this conflict," he pointed out.
