MÁV WANTS SHORTER RAILWAY LINES

Only 3500 km railway lines would be maintained by MÁV Company (Hungarian Railways) instead of the present 7500 km according to the new railway reform conception, Magyar Nemzet has been informed. The Railwaymen’s Trade Union proposes a social dispute to make the government discard the conception in the present form.

From the 7500 km long railway line only 3500 is planned by MÁV Company to be retained in its management, this was the essence of a briefing held by the President of the Company on April 22 for the trade unions represented in the company. As the conception of the railway reform must be forwarded to the government before June 15, a wide social dispute will be intitiated to refuse this plan, said Szilárd Karácsony, Vice President of the Railwaymen’s Trade Union to Magyar Nemzet. He said though they supported the idea of reform this could not be equivalent to the deterioration of the standard of services or to the unjustified deprivation of certain regions of railway transport.’This cannot be done without general social control,’ said the trade union leader.
