ILDIKÓ LENDVAI’S LETTER ABOUT ABORTION

Ildikó Lendvai, faction leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party does not want to reduce the number of abortions by prohibiting it, that is the essence of Ms Lendvai’s letter answering the letter of Ms Krisztina Morvai, reader, member of a UN committee for the chances of equality of women.

Ms Lendvai said in her letter it was not a good idea to limit the rights of people who are already in distress. She referred to the position taken by the UN committee disapproving of the practice of criminalizing abortion though she agreed with health and social policíy measures which led to the diminishing number of abortions. She also mentioned the establishing of the Ministry of Equal Chances by the Medgyessy government as a means of solving the problem though she recognized Ms Morvai’s achievements in this field.
