’Romania should not become a member of the European Union if it does not ensure the possibility of free and democratic elections’, said Zsolt Németh (Fidesz) to Magyar Nemzet. The chairman of the foreign committee of the parliament referred to the common proposal submitted by 15 representatives of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg sharply criticizing the recent modification of the election law in Romania. The new law prescribes that all minority parties not represented in parliament must prove that their membership is more than 15 pc of the minority they represent, and they have to recruit at least 300 members from each county. Zsolt Németh said the law was discriminative as for ethnic Romanian parties there were no such drastic conditions set up. The politician said the fact that the Hungarian Civic Union led by Jenő Szász, Mayor of Székelyudvarhely, has not been registered for formal excuses, clearly shows that the Romanian state wants to stop all efforts to regain autonomy of Transylvania.
