Two days before its EU accession Hungary signed a contract to transport its burnt out fuel cells to Russia. The Greens claim that the two countries eluded the rules of the European Union and endanger the environment. The amendment of the contract made in 1966 to operate the nuclear station in Paks was signed on Saturday by Victor Hristyenko, Russian Minister of Industry and Energy and by Ferenc Kontra, Ambassador to Moscow.
According to the Energy Club this step was contrary to the spirit of Europe and the Russian NGO Ecodefense have turned to Premier Medgyessy in an open letter, protesting against the procedure. The factory in the Ural region where the burnt out cells are restored contaminates the environment.
