PUBLIC TELEVISION IN PRIVATE PROPERTY?

The government wants to give the Hungarian (public) Television (MTV) into private property by the help of a would-be investor, claims László Jaczkovics, member of the supervising committee (Fidesz) of the board of trustees of the public endowment after its session yesterday.

The civic government decided back in 2000 to consolidate the position of MTV and wanted to build a headquarters for it from state resources. The socialist-liberal government agreed with it but now it has turned out that it wants to build the headquarters from private investment. According to Mr Jaczkovics in such a way the public television can be dependent on an investor and on the government. As the public television will only rent the building it will need a constant help from the state budget.
