The by-election was necessary to elect an MP instead of József Szájer (Fidesz) who became a MEP. Mátyás Firtl obtained 64,81 pc of all the votes while his main rival, Ferenc Csák (Hungarian Socialist Party) received only 24,39 pc of the votes. This means a plus 10 pc for Fidesz since the last turn of the by-election in autumn. In spite of the overwhelming success of Fidesz the result is not valid as the number of participants remained under the necessary 50 pc of all voters.
From among 51 000 voters only 28,31 pc went to the ballots. In the next round of the by-election two weeks later the 25 pc participation will be also enough according to the election law. The smaller parties had marginal results: MDF (3,4 pc), MIÉP (3,17), Free Democrats (2,42), Jobbik (1,0l) and Magyar Vidék és Polgári Párt (0,8 pc). According to Mátyás Firtl the result shows that even the Socialist voters are not satisfied with the present leaders of Sopron.
The Hungarian Socialist Party earlier started László Kránitz, the municipal chairman of the party for an MP but he had to back out after a scandal which followed after he had distributed gift vouchers for pensioners.
