Attila Bégány, V. district chairman of Jobbik party in Budapest said István Bibó would have voted with yes to the dual citizenship of Hungarians beyond the border on the referendum of December 5 but the police bundled him into their car.
According to the official version the politician who had played a part in the change of regime ’disturbed the peace’, that was why he had to be arraigned. Mr Bégány carried a banner with the inscription: ’Ferenc Gyurcsány! Because of your Hungarophob measures you are not worthy of inaugurating Bibó’s statute’ while the Prime Minister spoke about Bibó’s merits on the quay of the Danube where the statue was erected. István Bibó was the only minister of the revolutionary Imre Nagy government who waited in his parliament study until the Russians invaded Budapest and arrested him.
The monopolization of Bibó’s oeuvre as a ’reform Socialist’ started in the ’eighties by the left-liberal intellectuals who made a pact with the Communists and this clientele has been amply rewarded for their services by Gyula Horn, Péter Medgyessy, and Ferenc Gyurcsány. The erection of the statue was decided by ten left-wing NGOs in March 2002 and it cost about HUF 17-18 million. Opposition critics said István Bibó would have been ashamed of the company which surrounded his statue on this occasion.
