Now that the previous mandates expire, András Bozóky, Minister of Culture has appointed new directors, in majority closely attached to the Free Democrats. There were 41 competitors, and the new directors will start their work on September 1, their contract is for four years. It is usual that the appointments are suggested by the minor coalition party which confirms the hegemony of the Free Democrats in the Hungarian cultural life. The head of the Hungarian Cultural Centre in Brussels will be György Petőcz, at present director of the Centre of Eastern-Central Media and Communication Studies founded by George Soros. Mr Petőcz had been working for the liberal weekly Élet és Irodalom, and he is author of a volume of interviews about Fidesz, mainly with former Fidesz politicians who left their party for the Alliance of Free Democrats. In Bratislava the new director will be Péter Krasztev, the Eastern-Central European expert of CEO Consulting, also founded by Soros, candidate of literary studies, author of a monograph and a collection of studies, editor of five documentary films.

The Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre in Delhi will be headed by Imre Lázár, who said he was working for the foreign affairs department of the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage. Mr Lázár had been once on the same post. The institute in Warsaw will be taken by István Gordon who is director of Józsefváros Cultural Centre and had been working for Kurír and Playboy. The cultural institute in Prague will be directed by György Varga, translator, expert of Czech culture and language, who translated twenty books by Hrabal and who had been ambassador in Prague.
