Miklós Szinetár, director general of the State Opera House has resigned from his post to protest against the measures of austerity though the Ministry of Culture had spent several tens of millions to screen the institution in order to rationalize its operation. The Opera House had a budget of 6,5 billion forints back in November 2001 (raised from a former HUF 2,5 billion) but the Socialist-liberal government coming to power in the spring of 2002 started to reduce the sum consequently with the assistance of three new ministers. Apart from the fact that three premiers out of five must be cancelled and 89 persons must be dismissed, the Opera House has been unable to pay its contractors and the indebtedness has come to a critical point.
