It is more and more probable that László Sólyom, first chairman of the Constitutional Court will be the new President of the Republic as the Free Democrats would not participate in the voting process. According to Socialist sources the parliamentary faction of the Hungarian Socialist Party has warned István Hiller that it is his primary responsibility that Szili’s election will be achieved by the majority. Many Socialists think the key of the solution is in the hands of Premier Gyurcsány who could simply order the Free Democrat members of his cabinet to support Szili or give them the sack while another version has hopes in a final agreement with Gábor Kuncze, chairman of the Free Democrats. Some of the Socialists claim Gyurcsány may let Katalin Szili fall with the probable defeat of István Hiller as Gyurcsány’s political survival after a possible election defeat in 2006 could be ensured by gaining the post of the party chairman. Analysts think this latter version can be supported by secret talks between Premier Gyurcsány and László Sólyom. One of the future tasks of the new president will be the declaration of the date of the next general elections.
