Following non-appealable verdicts the enlargement of the National Swimming Pool for Competitions named after Alfréd Hajós, olympic swimming champion was practically started
last week. As a symbolic gesture the Association of Green Democrats has transplanted twelve trees from the construction site to other parts of the island. There had been a public acquisition tender for the state investment but the NGO called ’Movement for Margaret Island together with other NGOs filed a suit against the project. The Green Democrats support the project while other organizations criticize it. The enlargement serves the purposes of the European Swimming Championship to be held in Budapest, previously planned to be hosted by a pool to be built in Lágymányos but Premier Gyurcsány és Tamás Gyárfás, media entrepreneur, chairman of the Swimming Association have supported the site in the island.
