In Hungary there are about six hundred gipsy hovel settlements and the living conditions in them remind one of those of the third world. The government announced a competition in February to help a programme of social integration of the Romany people. Forty towns and villages took part in the competition to liquidate hovels and nine winners can divide HUF 680 million in the project. József Varga, chairman of the Foundation for Gipsies in Hungary claims this sum is not enough even for a surface treatment of the problem. The Romany integration media campaign has been going on for months, the more than HUF 500 million worth programme is directed by Aegis Media, a company which coordinated the media appearances of the Hungarian Socialist Party in the 2002 election, too. The goal of the campaign is to win the sympathy of the ’neutral’ part of Hungarian society for the Romany population.
