They complain they are unable to store the new crop and they can sell the good quality corn only with a great damage. The situation in the harvest question seems to be more and more scandalous, some corn producers in Zala county sell their crop in Slovakia. In Western Europe stores are usually in the hands of the farmers, in Hungary half of the storage capacity is owned by investors who make money at the expense of farmers thrown at their mercy, István Jakab, chairman of the National Union of Farmers and Farmers’ Cooperatives claims. He says the harvest work has been ended in several parts of the country because there is no store for the new wheat. Several stores are closed to force farmers to accept lower prices. The Ministry of Agriculture has turned to Brussels with the problem but an answer is expected only by September. There are 700 000 tons of wheat in the stores from the previous year’s harvest and Hungary hopes the Spanish and Portuguese market will buy this surplus.
