Yesterday the Romanian daily Cotidianul published the transcription of a recorded phone conversation between Bálint Magyar and a person whose code name was Lorin. Boglár László, government spokesperson said the Premier wanted to know if the published informations were true or not and if they were true how the details could leak out from the security services. The document published in Cotidianul is a report made on May 24, 2004 in Budapest about a phonecall byBálint Magyar to a person whose code name is Lorin and who is allegedly identical with Ildikó Szatmári, working earlier for the Ministry of Education and later for the Office of Hungarians Beyond the Borders (HTMH).

The minister speaks about a personal invitation and about the preparations of the MEP election campaign. Romanian experts find the document valid though they point out minor formal mistakes, too. Ildikó Szatmári received Hungarian citizenship in 2003 while his husband, Tibor Szatmári was given a residence permit this summer in spite of the fact the the National Security Office ’has pressed them out’ from their workplaces. The press department of the Minister of Education denied the invitation to Magyar’s home while Tibor Szatmári said to Magyar Nemzet he would sue everybody who publishes untruth about the case.

Tibor Szatmári worked for the Union of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) at the time of Péter Medgyessy’s premiership, heading the office of RMDSZ, his relations were excellent with Socialist and Free Democrat politicians dealing with problems of Hungarians beyond the borders. Tibor Szatmári said he had ’work contacts’ with the Romanian Embassy in Budapest but denied he had anything to do with intelligence work.
