DOCTORS WOULD STAY IN HUNGARY FOR NET 200 000 FORINTS

Young doctors would not think of jobs abroad if they could earn at least HUF 200 000 net for a month, a survey reports. Doctors with medical speciality would demand a somewhat higher salary. 66 pc of candidates to become specialists consider the option to find employment abroad.

In a survey about 200 candidates for specialists have been asked about their intention to find a job abroad. The survey conducted by the Health Management Centre of Semmelweis University and by the Hungarian Association of Residents shows that 66 pc of young doctors consider the prospect of finding a job in a European Union member state while 10 pc of them claim they are trying to find a job actively. Péter Barta, chairman of the Association said this 10 pc might not seem too serious but the majority of the specialists represented fields where there was a lack of doctors even at the moment in Hungary and the number of doctors leaving Hungary was increasing. Most of them go to England and Ireland. Barta said with some state subsidies these young doctors could be held in Hungary. The training of a doctor costs about HUF 10 million while the monthly salary of a young doctor is a net 100 000 forints. István Éger, chairman of the Hungarian Medical Chamber said since the EU-accession about 1000 doctors requested the certificate necessary for the employment abroad but they had no statistics about the actual number of doctors who left the country. Jenő Rácz, Minister of Health claims the problem cannot be solved by raising salaries. He said he could promise that Hungarian doctors’ salaries would attain by 2013 two-third of the EU average of that time.
