A woman (53) in England recently has given life to her own grandchild as her daughter could not bear the baby because of an incurable disease. Earlier the Hungarian Ministry of Health had planned to permit the procedure in Hungary but now it has decided against surrogate parenting. The modern medical science is capable to make difference between actual and surrogate parenting. Egg donation is prohibited in Hungary but before 1997 no law had referred to this method. Before 1997 there had been complicated contracts concluded by lawyers to avoid later legal suits. In 1999 the civic government majority prohibited all forms of surrogacy.

The main ethical (and legal) problem is how to protect children and how to exclude profit making in such cases. The present Hungarian law says the mother of the child is always the person who has born it so in case of a surrogate parenting a married couple has to adopt their own child. Minister of Health Jenő Rácz said to Magyar Nemzet it was necessary to take certain measures and a bill would be submitted soon to create a legally clear situation. The present opposition parties and the Catholic Church are against any concession.
