TURUL TO BE DUMPED BESIDE LENIN?

The Alliance of Free Democrats claims that the statue of a ’turul’, the mythical bird of ancient Hungarians, recently erected in a Buda district to commemorate victims of World War II should be placed in the statue park of the Communist regime.

This has been announced by Péter Gusztos MP but several local citizens protested against the proposal, reminding him of the fact that Stalin was still a freeman of the city of Budapest and the memorial of the Soviet oprressors was still there in Szabadság square. The statute has been blessed by the Christian churches at its inauguration on last Saturday. The church leaders claim that the wish of the Free Democrats remind them of the Communist era when ’clerical’ statues were demolished.
