Zoltán Gál J., political state secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office has had ’professional consultations’ with the leaders of MTV, the Hungarian public television, Magyar Nemzet has been informed. This is not a great novelty because the former government spokesman had become notorious for his informal briefings for left-liberal media chiefs.
It is highly questionable, however, that the public television can preserve its impartiality and neutrality influenced so heavily by the government. There are photos in the possession of Magyar Nemzet showing the state secretary and András Simon, deputy chairman of MTV responsible for the programmes. They would not explain why such a consultation was necessary. Earlier such ’consultations’ had been regularly held with left-liberal media chiefs while journalists of the Hungarian Radio or those of Magyar Nemzet had not been invited. Premier Gyurcsány had also appeared in such confidential briefings.
