Károly Kabai, former business partner of János Veres, Minister of Finance has been indicted for the cumulative offence of tax evasions, Magyar Nemzet has been informed. The news has caused a shock in circles close to Prime Minister Gyurcsány. The offences were committed in the company in the second half of the ’nineties. According to the company registry János Veres and Károly Kabai founded Bogát-Ferr Ltd in 1991, János Veres, who has risen to the post of Finance Minister by the help of the Hungarian Socialist Party, had been part owner of the firm between 1991 and 1994 while Károly Kabai was managing director until the end of October, 1997. The profile of the company was the purchase and recycling of industrial waste, and the purchases between 1997 and 1999 were partly undocumented or covered by fictitious invoices. Though the indictment was effective in 1999, there has been no verdict until now, the trials have been regularly assigned on new judges. János Veres became MP of the Socialist Party first in 1994 and he sold his part in the company. His official biography in 1996 contained still the reference to his partial ownership in Bogár-Ferr Ltd, now his biography omits this fact. It is also interesting that though Károly Kabai has been indicted, his firms still receive regular orders from the Ministry of Defence and from the State Railway Company MÁV.
