ERRONEOUS TRANSPORT POLICY

While the losses of Hungarian State Railway Stockholding Company (MÁV) increase continuously along with the growth of its debts, the standard of its services is being reduced, and the railway costs more and more money for the taxpayers because of the erroneous transport policy supported by the government.

The main cause of the poor conditions of MÁV is the fact that the state does not fully refund the services ordered by it and the maintenance costs of the railway network so the company must cover the losses with bank loans of high interests. The government counts primarily on fuel and car taxes and is not interested in developing or even maintaning community transport. Massive lay-off is expected in MÁV next year while the salaries of trade union leaders have been spectacularly raised.
