Mrs Kósa is the fifth on the list of the Hungarian Socialist Party as candidate for member of the European Parliament but this means a third position in reality as László Kovács and Gyula Horn precede her who do not wish to become representatives in Brussels. Magda Kovács Mrs Kósa, member of the parliamentary committee of religious affairs (and its former chairperson) said it was to be feared that the whole symbolic system and feasts of Christianity overcame the secular feasts of Europe, too, which might lead even to wars.
Bishop András Veres said this statement was clearly anti-Vatican and anti-clerical and he expected the Hungarian Socialist Party to apologize for this offence, expressing his hopes that Mrs Kósa’s statement was not part of her party’s campaign for the seats in the European Parliament.
