Because of an inner strife of the European Union and because of a promise to Budapest László Salgó can become the chief of Europol, the law enforcement headquarters of the European Union. The Hungarian government designated László Salgó to the post at the request of the European Union according to a EU official who said Hungary’s candidate had a good chance to win the post. There was a great debate among the French, German, and Italian officials about the situation as for a longer time there has been only a managing director leading the institution. The EU functionary said he did not know about László Salgó’s past as a secret Communist agent. Europol is a supranational institution of investigation to fight international crime, it started to operate in January 1994 but it has been working in the present form since January 1998. The image of Hungary will not improve by the debate to be expected about Mr Salgó’s past as it has deteriorated in a similar way because of László Kovács’s poor performance as designated commissioner of energy affairs.
