After László Toller has backed out of the contest there are only two candidates for the chairmanship of the Hungarian Socialist Party, István Hiller and Imre Szekeres. Some say Katalin Szili’s withdrawal can be explained with her ambitions to become the President of the Republic. Katalin Szili, now Speaker of the House is said to have concluded a secret agreement with Premier Gyurcsány that she will be designated as President next summer. A month ago Ms Szili referred to the need to reform the party and wanted to enter the race for chairmanship but this week she made it clear she did not want any leading position in the party. György Jánosy, the chairman of the national committee has been also ousted from the party. Ferenc Kósa film director, MP of the Socialist Party has expressed his concern over the fact that reformists are elbowed out from the party. István Hiller, Minister of Culture is regarded widely as the probable winner though Imre Szekeres, now deputy chairman of the party has also strong supporters though he has lost his position as political state secretary.
