’The self-governments were promised in 2002 more money but the promises did not say only self-governments with a Socialist-Free Democrat majority in leadership would be granted subsidies’, said Zoltán Kovács MP (Fidesz), chairman of the parliamentary committee of self-governments, Mayor of Pápa and Lajos Kósa MP, member of the committe, Mayor of Debrecen yesterday. They said the bill about categorical grants names 78 settlements, and 40 of them are Socialist, 8 Free Democrat and only 4 are led by a Fidesz majority. This sort of discrimination has been criticized by Fidesz for years and left-wing towns have been regularly exempted from the different investment and civil service laws. István Jauernik, vice chairman of the committee (Hungarian Socialist Party) said it was erroneous to label self-governments from a political point of view. ’Though the left won the elections in 2002 with a great majority this did not influence the method of the distribution of categorical subsidies.’
