József Pálinkás, chairman of the cultural section of Fidesz claims, however, that there are reprisals against the best part of the Hungarian intellectuals. A month ago a pro-government daily leaked out informations about the privatization of research institutes and a group of famous scientists protested against the action.
This information was preceded by a blunder of Minister of Economy, János Kóka who said all scientific institutions should be demolished which did not serve the competitiveness of the country. József Pálinkás said the series of threats all referred to the intention of the government to liquidate ’non-productive’ basic research. During the Fidesz government 1.01 pc of GNP was used to support research and development (raised from the 0.67 pc of the Horn government) – now this rate has been reduced again to 0.88 pc.
