’There was no need to privatize the public utility companies in Budapest’, two opposition leaders in the self-government of Budapest claim and they want to start the process of reprivatization. They say the self-government has run through several tens of billions of forints which had come in from selling the minority property rights of the metropolitan water works and sewage system. The foreign investors will make a guaranteed profit while the charges have been tripled in eight years.
The minority property rights were sold eight years ago, then the charge of a m3 of water cost HUF 56.4 (including V.A.T.), now this costs HUF 151,3. The sewage charge has increased from HUF 66.5/m3 (1997) to the present HUF 212.6. András Kupper, faction leader of Fidesz in the metropolitan assembly said the capital city was simply colonized by this method while László Zsinka (Hungarian Justice and Life Party) said the two public utility works should be amalgamated. ’This sort of privatization is unprecedented in Europe’, he added.
