In the Hungarian Opera House not only the fees of contracted artists are retained but the salaries of civil servants, too. Conductor Ádám Medveczky is a civil servant who receives a relatively low basic salary and an extra fee for each performance, the latter was halved from September for economic reasons.Ádám Medveczky said to Magyar Nemzet now even these fees were retained, he received only his basic salary.
’I do not blame primarily the Opera House, rather the Ministry of Culture and the government’, said the conductor. ’It is ridiculous and petty-minded as it is not probable that a couple of millions will help the budget’, he added. Two days ago Magyar Nemzet reported that opera singer Dénes Gulyás received a letter about the same restrictive measure. The leaders of the Hungarian Opera claim the measures affect only contracted artists though Medveczky’s case seems to contradict this. The Opera House has announced recently that the artists will get their fees within a couple of weeks.
