Mainly the expenses of housing maintenance rose. District heating prices have risen by 13 pc, gas heating by 19 pc, electricity by 22 pc more than a year ago. These affected mainly pensioners. The main cause of higher prices were higher VAT and excise charges, e.g. in the case of cigarettes. Though there have been harsh criticisms of Hungarian monetary policy, Tibor Draskovics, Minister of Finance said yesterday in a conference of Ministers of Finance of the European Union that it was necessary to treat more flexibly the regulations of state budget deficit in the European Union.
