UKRAINIAN ARMS FOR IRAQ

Surplus Hungarian arms are not sought in the Near East.

According to Financial Times Deutschland the Iraqi army will be armed with Ukrainian weapons though Hungary, along with several other former Socialist countries, has an arsenal of surplus Soviet weapons. 65 pc of the arms for the 28 000 Iraqi soldiers will be bought for 259 million dollars from the Ukraine, including 1500 armoured vehicles and 2000 jeeps. The Hungarian Ministry of Defence has not been asked for arms by Iraq and as Iraq belongs to a critical zone such sales are excluded by Hungarian authorities.
