Because of the diminished sources of the Ministry of Defence the contract about the training of fighter pilots in Canada for NATO can be cancelled, Magyar Nemzet has been informed. According to the contract the would-be pilots’ necessary training would cost more than HUF 50 billion in the next seventeen years but because of the budget deficit even the home training flights are in danger. The so-called NATO Flying Training in Canada programme started in March, 2002 plans to train 7-8 pilots trained in Canada for 23 months with 200-240 flying hours. Now a Hungarian pilot can fly 80 hours annually at best but only 50 hours on a fighter. So far 24 pilots have taken part in the programme.
