Within a couple of years the lack of doctors and skilled medical workers can become critical in Hungary, while the lack of nurses seems the greatest problem. At the moment every eleventh post of a physician is vacant which means that in all about 3000 jobs are vacant which is the equivalent of the staff of six big hospitals and six clinics. In the years to come a further reduction is expected because the age groups giving many doctors are close to retirement and after them much less doctors have been trained. The problem is more serious in the country and there are great problems in the field of psychiatry, paediatrics, pathology, and anaesthesiology. There are also 4 000 nurses missing and 22 pc of the present workers are over 51 and after ten years 49 pc of them will retire. In the European Union 100 000 residents have an average of 387 doctors and 715 nurses, in Hungary these numbers are 355 and 523 respectively.
