A couple of days after crushing the revolution and fight for liberty in 1956 the later renowned economist started to write his reports under the pseudonym István Szabó to the Communist secret service. Later his code name became Lajos Nagy and he furnished more ’useful pieces of information’ as it turns out from documents in the Historical Archives of the State Security Services. The reports were written between November 29, 1956 and August 16, 1961, on 395 typewritten pages.
The economist of international recognition gave informations not only about his colleagues but about his own family, too. Tamás Bácskai from 1962 represented the Hungarian People’s Democracy as secretary to the World Council of Peace in Austria and this post could be taken only by persons who were fully trusted by the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party.
Mr Bácskai’s writings have been published regularly by Népszabadság, Népszava, Figyelő, 168 óra. President Árpád Göncz in 1999 decorated Tamás Bácskai with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of the Hungarian Republic.
