PART OF MARGARET ISLAND TO BE PRIVATELY OWNED

A – for the time being anonymous – firm may be the owner of a part of Margaret island which has been regarded so far as a public park because the decision accepted by the Metropolitan Assembly last week permits this, Magyar Nemzet has been informed.

The document refers to the possibility that the complex to house the European swimming championship next year can be also privatized. The plan of the contract was approved by the Metropolitan Assembly.

The full profit of the further operation of the complex will go to the investor who can also determine the conditions of the public use of Alfréd Hajós National Swimming Pool. The contract should be approved by the National Office of Sport and the Sportfólió Public Utility Association.

The area to be used makes up 2,5 hectares of the public park and it is also possible that a smaller hotel will be also built there. The government has exerted a pressure on the Metropolitan Assembly to accept the plan to help the restrictions of the budget while a movement of the Greens wishes to bring the case to the court.
