Yesterday the statement of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference said the bill of the so-called ’agent law’ is just a tool to discredit the Church and the priesthood. The body expressed its hope that God and the affected persons will pardon the sins of persons belonging to the Church who became members of the secret police and gravely offended their brethren.
Yesterday in his speech in parliament Gyula Horn, former Prime Minister said Hungary had no debts in the process of lustration while Imre Mécs MP (Free Democrats) said the first and the second freely elected government were culpable for the lack of passing the law. Sándor Burány MP (Socialist) claimed yestereday it was ’almost prohibited’ to recruit agents from among members of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party while an analysis found on hvg.-hu portal documents the contrary: in 1968 one fifth of the network of informers were members of the state party.
