’It depends only on the decision of the government whether the shop owners will receive their damages until September 15 caused by the burning down of the former Budapest Sports Hall six years ago’, Péter Horváth, lawyer of the association of the victims of the fire said to Magyar Nemzet.
Sportfolio Ltd, a state-owned public utility society granted the payment of HUF 622 million in damages without interests for shopkeepers and vendors. The final decision is in the hands of the government, it is not known yet how this huge sum will be provided. The sports hall burnt down in 1999 just before the Christmas fair when occasional sellers rented the premises. The fire destroyed the pavilions of 330 sellers and their stocks. The cause of the fire might have been a candle seller but it turned out the hall itself had no permission to organize a fair and none of the sellers was insured.
