’The greatest burden of the country is that our young people in their twenties are not mobile enough, they want to prosper at home instead of going abroad to work’, Premier Gyurcsány said in a forum of Demos Hungary. Sir Anthony Giddens, chief ideologist of the Labour Party has criticized the Premier saying Ferenc Gyurcsány was not positive enough, always speaking about the difficulties of doing anything. Ferenc Gyurcsány said it was in vain to feed ourselves with hopes that in this half-periphery of Europe from Poland to Croatia there would be a developed bourgeois democracy and a market economy in an instant – it would be the work of many generations, perhaps for fifty or one hundred years. According to PM Gyurcsány this is because in Hungary the democratic civilian attitude exists only in traces and a strong democracy is not imaginable without a strong bourgeoisie. He said more British subjects worked in Hungary than vice versa and the lack of physical mobility was detrimental for Hungary. Sir Anthony Giddens expressed his surprise hearing PM Gyurcsány’s pessimistic statements. He said in Brazil or in certain countries in Africa people were much poorer, still they were trying to fight unemployment and poverty. Kinga Göncz, Minister of Family and Social Affairs also spoke about the grave problems of unemployment, health, regional policy, child poverty, and education.
