The fact of the meeting has been recognized by the German Chancellery but they could not specify the topic of the talks. Informed sources claim the subject of the meeting was the vanished money of the German communist party. Earlier there was an investigation in the case and there were suspicions that the party and the secret police STASI had at least 100-200 million Deutschmarks laundered with the help of Hungarian banks – out of the vanished 6 billion marks. Government spokesperson Boglár László said yesterday the two ministers had informal talks about the future cooperation of their countries while informed sources claim this was an official visit to remind the Hungarian partner of the obligations earlier undertaken but left unperformed. Péter Medgyessy in 1997 as Minister of Finance promised assistance in the case to Germany but nothing happened during the Horn- government while the investigations during the Orbán-government revealed strings leading to Hungarian banks and to firms attached to the Socialists. In 2003 Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy had secret talks about the case again, and the Premier recognized some of the money had been laundered in Hungary, offering his help to clarify the situation as Berlin critized the Hungarian authorities several times for their uncooperative attitude.
